AN EXCELLENT SCORE FOR THE FIRST AUCTION OF MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY INDIAN ART IN FRANCE

As contemporary Indian art continues to consolidate its triumphant debut over the last 10 years on the world art market in London, New York, and Dubai, Paris is following suit in saluting this extremely promising state of affairs, currently still in the early stages.

On December 3rd, 2007, Artcurial met the challenge by organizing an inaugural auction, the first devoted to modern and contemporary Indian art in France.

With total sales at 1,418,000 € (US$ 2.059.708 - INR 80.967.913 ), this opening salle has been a success. Artcurial plans to organize a second sale of Indian Art in September, 2008.

STRONG INTEREST IN THE YOUNG INDIAN ART SCENE

The auction confirmed the very strong interest in emerging Indian artists currently extent worldwide.
The artists concerned are between 30 and 45 years of age.

A tough telephone competition between five Indian collectors drove up the price of a canvas by Manjunath Kamath, Teeth politics, executed in 2007, to 46,600 €, six times its estimated value (est.7600-8600 €, n°769). The work was purchased by a major Indian collector.

A French collector carried off Stretched bodies, an acrylic on canvas dated 2007 by Bose Krishnamachari at 37,200 € (est.30-35,000 €, n°758), while Stretched bodies, a sculpture painted with acrylic over a quarter of a sphere in fiberglass and wood by the same artist, recently exhibited at Hélène Lamarque Gallery in Paris, was knocked down at 29,700 € (est.25-30,000 €, n°759), a purchase from the French market.

A canvas by Shibu Natesan, On the beach, 2005, whose painting has the precision and realism of a photographic montage, entered a British collection at 28,500 € (est.25-30,000 €, n°764).

A work by Farhad Hussain, one of the most striking figures of the young Indian scene, was almost unknown only a year ago. His paintings humorously satirize the stereotypes of family happiness at the center of his investigations. Sans titre, dated 2006, was purchased by a collector from Singapore at 23,300 € (est.18-22,000 €, n°773).

Birendra Pani explores the theme of duality, seeking a balance between tradition and modernity. Risk, the double edge of society; yoga series, 2006 was sold at 9700 € (est.6600-7600 €, n°776). This large canvas (122 x 183 cm) represents a Gotipua dancer from Orissa standing in a yoga position against a background cut out with a razor-blade, the famous double-bladed Gillette razor used all over the world.

Another important figure, Surekha, whose work is emblematic of the multidisciplinary nature of an up-and-coming generation that uses video, photography, and installations, was present with a 2001 installation entitled Fragments of a Wedding Diary. The work includes 33 black-and-white photographs referring to the retouching techniques used by photographic studios specializing in photography of marriage or other important events in the life of a family, commenting on the fragmentation of the Indian family unit. It has entered a French collection at 14,200 € (est.12-15,000 €, n°749).

Finally, a canvas by Manish Pushkale, a young abstract painter, entitled Akshat, 2003, also joined a French collection at 22,300 € (est.15-20,000 €, n°716).

A SOLID WELCOME FOR CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS

The generation of artists born in the 1950s was also present.

Atul Dodiya, considered as one of the most important Indian painters of his generation, was represented by an enigmatic watercolor entitled Sabari Stretching, 2007, knocked down at 38,800 € to the Indian market (est.32-35,000 €, n°744).

Emblematic of the work of Anita Dube, Sea Creature, 2000, a spectacular photograph from an edition of 10 prints, shows hands covered with a multitude of ceramic eyes, the same eyes that animate sculptures of Hindu divinities. Sea Creature has joined a French collection at 5200 € (est.3-3500 €, n°745).

SIGNIFICANT PRICES FOR INDIAN OLD MASTERS
FRENCH RECORD SET FOR RAZA

Significant prices were noted for top Indian modern artists.

The highest bid of the sale was for a painting by Sayed Haider Raza, Rajasthan, dated 1984, bought by the British market for 490,900 € / US$ 717.107 (est.450-550,000 €, n°691). This is a record in France for a canvas by this artist.
A rare, large-size format (175 x 175 cm), Rajasthan illustrates the two major influences on the artist's oeuvre: European and American art history, and Hindu thought, specifically Bindu philosophy.
Bindu, another canvas by Sayed Haider Raza executed in 1984, was sold at the very respectable price of 223,100 € (est.120-150,000 €, n°693), purchased by the Indian market.
A concentration of energy into a circle, Bindu became a recurrent element in Raza's painting starting in the 1980s.

An excellent performance also for a piece by Akbar Padamsee Sans titre, Paysage, 1964 sold for 105,300 € (est.60-80,000 €, n°692), purchased by the Indian market.

Viswanadhan is one of the most renowned Indian artists worldwide. Sans titre, 2004, reached 36,200 € (est.22-25,000 €, n°702), purchased by a French collector.

There was also very sustained interest from French collectors in works by Sohan Qadri and Shobha Broota.
They contributed to doubling the estimates for works by Sohan Qadri at 16,800 € and 36,200 €, for Purusha III, 1999 (est.8-10,000 €, n°719) and Smrti, 2007 (est.18-22,000 €, n°720), a sign of well-deserved recognition for this 70-year-old artist, currently exhibiting at Nathalie Seroussi in Paris.
They also carried off two canvases by Shobha Broota, Origin 94, 1992 (est.9-11,000 €, n°717) and Round the earth, 2001 (est.6500-7500 €, n°718) at 10 400 € and 8400 € respectively.

Another remarkable result was seen for Satki Burman with Fête de lumière, circa 1984-1985, knocked down at 40,900 € to the Indian market (est.25-35,000 €, n°729) and
Jivya Soma Mashe, with lot 737 mounting to 10 500 € from an estimated value of 4400-4800 €

PREVIEW AND BOOKS DEDICATIONS

The exceptional quality of the auction exhibit organized at Hôtel Dassault was unanimously appreciated. The exhibit also contributes to the ongoing constructive and very encouraging growth of the reputation of modern and contemporary Indian art. Inaugurated in the presence of the Ambassador of India to France, this preview was an opportunity for encounters and book dedications thanks to the participation of Sayed Haider Raza, Sujata Bajaj, and Sakti Burman.

Alors que la création indienne contemporaine a fait une irruption magistrale en moins de 10 ans sur le marché de l’art mondial à Londres, New York et Dubaï, Paris se devait de saluer ce phénomène hautement prometteur qui n’en est qu’à ses débuts.

Le 3 décembre, Artcurial relevait le défi avec une vente inaugurale, la première qui soit consacrée à l’art moderne et contemporain indien en France.

Avec un produit de 1 418 000 €, cette première expérience est un succès.
Artcurial prévoit d’organiser une seconde vente d’Art indien en Septembre 2008.

BEL INTERET POUR LA JEUNE SCENE INDIENNE

La vente révélait un intérêt certain pour la jeune scène indienne qui s’impose actuellement au niveau international.
Les artistes concernés ont aujourd’hui entre 30 et 45 ans.

Une bataille d’enchères serrée, disputée par 5 téléphones indiens hissait la toile de Manjunath Kamath, Teeth politics, éxécutée en 2007, à 46 600 €, six fois son estimation (est.7600-8600 €, n°769). Elle était emportée par un grand collectionneur indien.

Un collectionneur français enlevait Stretched bodies, acrylique sur toile de 2007, de Bose Krishnamachari, 37 200 € (est.30-35 000 €, n°758), tandis que Stretched bodies, sculpture peinte à l’acrylique sur un quart de sphère en fibre de verre et bois, du même artiste, présenté récemment à Paris par la galerie Hélène Lamarque, partait à 29 700 € (est.25-30 000 €, n°759), achat du marché français.

Un toile de Shibu Natesan, On the beach, 2005, dont la peinture a la précision et le réalisme d’un montage photographique, rejoignait une collection britannique pour
28 500 € (est.25-30 000 €, n°764).

L’œuvre de Farhad Hussain, qui est l’une des figures les plus marquantes de cette jeune scène indienne, était quasiment inconnue il y a encore un an. Sa peinture épingle non sans humour le stéréotype du bonheur familial qui est au centre de son propos. Sans titre, toile de 2006, était emportée par Singapour à 23 300 € (est.18-22 000 €, n°773).

Birendra Pani explore le thème de la dualité, à la recherche d’un équilibre entre tradition et modernité. Risk, the double edge of society ; yoga series, 2006 partait à 9700 € (est.6600-7600 €, n°776). Cette toile de grand format (122 x 183 cm) représente un danseur Gotipua d’Orissa qui se détache dans une posture de yoga sur un fond découpé en lame de rasoir, la fameuse double lame Gillette utilisée dans le monde entier.

Autre figure importante, Surekha, dont le travail est emblématique de la pluridisciplinarité de cette nouvelle génération pratiquant vidéo, photographie et installation, était présente avec une installation de 2001, Fragments of a Wedding Diary.
Cette œuvre composée de 33 photographies noir et blanc, réhaussées de couleurs évoquant le travail de retouche fait par les studios de prises de vues de mariages et autres événements marquant la vie des familles, interroge la fragmentation de la cellule familiale indienne. Elle rejoint une collection française à 14 200 € (est.12-15 000 €, n°749).

Enfin une toile du jeune peintre abstrait Manish Pushkale, Akshat, 2003, gagnait elle aussi une collection française à 22 300 € (est.15-20 000 €, n°716).

ACCUEIL SOLIDE POUR LES ARTISTES CONTEMPORAINS

La génération des artistes nés dans les années 50 était également présente.

Atul Dodiya, considéré comme l’un des peintres indiens les plus importants de sa génération, était représenté par une aquarelle énigmatique Sabari Streching, 2007, emportée 38 800 € par le marché indien (est.32-35 000 €, n°744).

Emblématique du travail d’Anita Dube, Sea Creature, 2000, spectaculaire photographie provenant d’un tirage à 10 exemplaires, montre des mains recouvertes d’une multitude d’yeux en céramique, ceux-là mêmes qui donnent vie aux sculptures de divinités hindous. Sea Creature prend place dans une collection française pour 5200 €
(est.3-3500 €, n°745).

PRIX SIGNIFICATIFS POUR LES OLD MASTERS INDIENS
RECORD FRANÇAIS POUR RAZA

Des prix significatifs étaient enregistrés pour les grands artistes modernes indiens.

La plus haute enchère de la vente allait à la toile de Sayed Haider Raza, Rajasthan, datée de 1984, emportée par le marché britannique à 490 900 € (est.450-550 000 €, n°691). C’est un record français pour une toile de l’artiste.
Rare par son imposant format (175 x 175 cm), Rajasthan illustre deux des influences majeures de la peinture de l’artiste, celle de l’histoire de l’art européen et américain, et celle de la pensée hindoue caractérisée par le Bindu.
Bindu, toile éxécutée par Sayed Haider Raza en 1984 également, obtenait un très beau prix à 223 100 € (est.120-150 000 €, n°693), achat du marché indien.
Concentration de l’énergie en un cercle, le Bindu est l’un des éléments récurrents de la peinture de Raza à partir des années 80.

Belle performance pour l’œuvre de Akbar Padamsee Sans titre, Paysage, 1964 qui montait à 105 300 € (est.60-80 000 €, n°692), achat du marché indien.

L’intérêt des collectionneurs français était encore très soutenu pour les œuvres de Sohan Qadri et Shobha Broota.
Ils faisaient doubler les estimations de celles de Sohan Qadri à 16 800 € et 36 200 €, pour Purusha III, 1999 (est.8-10 000 €, n°719) et Smrti, 2007 (est.18-22 000 €, n°720). Une belle reconnaissance pour cet artiste âgé de 70 ans qui est actuellement présenté chez Nathalie Seroussi à Paris.
Et emportaient les deux toiles de Shobha Broota, Origin 94, 1992 (est.9-11 000 €, n°717) et Round the earth, 2001 (est.6500-7500 €, n°718) à 10 400 € et 8400 €.

Signalons aussi les belles enchères obtenues par Satki Burman avec Fête de lumière, circa 1984-1985, enlevée 40 900 € par le marché indien (est.25-35 000 €, n°729) et
Jivya Soma Mashe, avec le lot 737 monté à 10 500 € sur une estimation de 4400-4800 €

EXPOSITION ET DEDICACES

La qualité de l’exposition à l’Hôtel Dassault des œuvres présentées à la vente a été unanimement saluée. Cette exposition a permis un travail constructif et très encourageant de sensibilisation à l’art moderne et contemporain Indiens. Inaugurée en présence de Monsieur l’Ambassadeur d’Inde en France, cette preview fut l’occasion de rencontres et de dédicaces de livres grâce à la participation notamment de Sayed Haider Raza, Sujata Bajaj et Sakti Burman.
